BARCELOOOONA, a dream come true!

BAAARCELOONA! I have always wanted to come here. We docked 9am and were allowed 9:30, and got out 10. I was happy to meet and say hi to Patricia and her mother and her cousin, aunts and uncle. It was so nice to see her so happy also. Jay Bekah and I then took a taxi to the catalunya square with this crazy Japanese lady who imposed to join and would not stop talking.

Even the patient Bekah was frustrated and I also had trouble understanding her Japanese with my lifetime of Japanese. The taxi driver was very nice, and would speak to me about where to go etc, but of course solely in Spanish. Nonetheless, I could guess some things about what he said, and the funniest part was that the taxi driver totally picked up the craziness of the lady and we exchanged looks to share this. It was strange to struggle to understand one another language wise, but still be connected so well in picking up other people’s vibes.

After getting off, we parted ways with the lady and walked along and saw casa de batllo, and it was so cool to see the building I have copied and pasted from internet sites for the IB Art research books. From afar, I could tell the building and it was so exciting. Same went for La Pedrera- I really wish I could have gone in there- NEXT TIME.

Walking around Barcelona really felt like walking in a museum on its own, with beautiful architecture and exciting corners that one could explore. Among those were Casa Asia, done by another Catalan architect. I found so many beautiful patterns and designs and it was very inspiring.

We stopped by a baguette shop before going to Sagrada Familia. Like Patri had introduced, the bread had been mushed with tomatoes, and I had one with the catalunian ham-yum!

Sagrada Familia was beautiful from the outside despite the construction. Looking at it from the outside gave me a proud feeling of being part of historical building being made- I wondered what this is what people felt when for example Petra was being carved, or the pyramids being built. I imagined people visiting the cathedral years after its done, admiring it, wondering how on earth one person could come up with such a piece.

This feeling wasn't enough, and I was even more shocked/blown away once I was inside. The inside ceiling was so tall and intricate and elaborate, yet so calming. The pillars/columns looked like trees standing tall, and the stained glass were beautiful. The ceiling had beautiful patterns that were symmetrical that reminded me of a kaleidoscope, and it was hard to comprehend someone thinking of all these details that are so imaginative, yet perfectly valid to be made into a standing building structure. Everywhere I looked I found a new detail or a plant or an animal or a combination.

Unfortunately bekah and I didn't go up, but we still spent 2.5 hours thoroughly enjoying the atmosphere and the art of Gaudi.

We then headed to Park Guell on a metro. It was so crowded, and at first reminded me of Tokyo Disneyland. The whimsical colors, shapes and houses made Jay almost feel Gaudis almost scary/freakish, but I still found it amazing that one can apply this imaginative thoughts into reality. I met my student Takashi, and he also shared an interesting story that Guell had one of his servants naked to sit on the benches, so that Gaudi could design a bench that could really hit nice spots on the bum and the back for people to sit.

We also took photos with the famous lizard.

We then hurried back near Colombo tower, and we found a nice place to eat tapas, paella, and crema cataluna cake. We also ordered churros con chocolata. It was HEAVENLY.
We also ordered half a sangria thinking it would be small, but look what we got- just half a HUGE glass.

Hurray for Barcelona and Antoni Gaudi, I'll be back!!!
