Egypt 2- Pyramids, Yahoooo! エジプト２−ピラミッド,ひゃっほ〜！！！

From the diary:

"We woke up at 4:30 to make it to meeting at 5am, when we then headed to the bus. After 3 hours, we arrived at the Cairo museum. Among other things, we saw golden objects from King Tut's grave and also got to see a room with the actual tombs, where he was covered in 3 tomb layers, each decorated so so intricately and beautifully. There were many motifs of birds and bird wings and the lines and the patterns were just mind-blowing. It is strange to think to put together that much effort for someone’s death and on preserving that person. On top of the multilayered tomb, the tomb and objects were in 9 boxes all together (like matoryoshka Russian dolls). I just wish we had more time, as we only had 1 hr to listen and look at these things. "

日記から：

『４時半に起きて５時に集合、そこからバスに乗った。３時間後、カイロ博物館につく。たくさんのものがあるなか、ツタンカーメンのお墓からの金でつくられた物や、お墓も見られた。お棺の入れ物は３層もあって、とても細かくきれいな模様が施してある。鳥や翼のモチーフが、本当に細かくてきれい。だれかの死にこんなにも時間や努力を費やせるのは不思議な感覚。何層もで作られたお棺だけでなく、それが入る９個の箱（ロシアのマトリョーシカみたい）も見た。１時間しか見て聞く時間がなかったから、もうちょっと時間が欲しかったなぁ〜』

After the museum we went to a restaurant. We passed Nile river, and other small streams with heaps and heaps of trash and a dead horse. It was difficult to comprehend that this was normal here, and also in the background of this townscape, we could see the pyramids at the back.

博物館の後はお昼ご飯。ナイル川も通り過ぎたけど、ほかの小川みたいなそばをとおると、そこはたくさんのゴミであふれている。死んだ馬もいた。これがここで普通なのかな？と理解しがたかったけど、その景色の中には、ピラミッドも遠くに見える。

Once done with a yummy meal, we headed to the biggest pyramid first-146m high. The traders were very strong willed- I managed to get away by not looking them in the eye and going straight to the pyramids, but later I heard a story was that they would say getting on the camel would be a present, but would ask for money once time came for getting off- one Japanese tourist had paid $100 to get off. 

おいしいご飯を食べた後は、待ちに待ったピラミッド！最初は一番大きいやつー１４６mもある。物売りの人たちは、とても強引。目をあまり合わせないで、まっすぐピラミッドのほうに歩いて私は免れたけど、こんな話もきいた。らくだにただで乗せてあげる、と言って、乗せたと思ったら降りるためにお金を責められる。ある日本の人は＄１００も払って降りられたみたい。

　　　　　

We headed next to the panorama place where we could see 3 different sized pyramids.  We also went to the sphinx. 

その後は、３つのピラミッドが見える所と、スフィンクス。

Egypt 1- Ramadan in Port Said エジプト１−ポートサイドでのラマダン

One of the great things about traveling the world with a boat- going through canals! 

Before arriving in Egypt, we passed through the Suez Canal. 

A place I had seen on the map or learned about in Geography class, it still feels unreal that I have "gone through" it.

世界を船で旅する特典は、運河もとおれる事！

エジプトに着く前は、スエズ運河を通りました。小さな頃から、地図でみたり、地理のクラスで習ったりしたところ。そこを「通った」実感は未だにあまりわかない。

We arrived before schedule, to Port Said, and so we set off to explore the port town. My impressions from the diary:

"At 4 we were already arriving at Port Said, and we got let out early as well! We took ourselves outside to explore. It was quite a shocking sight walking through the streets. The buildings were very old and the streets very dirty. It was also strange to think that this was the country that just had a revolution in 25^th January. At first sight, every person I came across seemed very tense and with a hard facial expression, but soon I would hear “welcome to Egypt” also, and we were all thinking that maybe this is the change that is happening after revolution. "

予定より早くポートサイドに着いたので、私たちも街を散策に。印象は日記から：

『４時にはポートサイドに到着して、私たちも下船できることに！外へ散策しにいった。道を歩いて、いろいろ見て感じたのはショックな感情。建物はとても古く、通りも古びている。この国に、つい１月に革命があったことも、思い出すと不思議な感覚。一見、とおり過ぎる人たちの表情は固いような印象だったけれど、話し始めたら、「エジプトにようこそ」なんていってくれる声も。みんなで、これがここの人たちにとって変化の始まりなのかもね、と話し合った。』

Same as in Jordan, it was still Ramadan and this was still going on in Egypt. Even so, we were hungry and went for a quest for some food. We met a lovely 14 years old boy, Mohammad, who took us to a falafel sandwich place. 

ヨルダンと同じく、エジプトでもイスラム教のラマダンの期間だった。それでも私たちはお腹がすいていて、食べ物を探しはじめる。すると、１４歳の素敵な男の子、ムハメッドに出会う。私たちをファラフェルのサンドイッチ屋さんに連れていってくれた。

Initially I was scared to eat the food as one of the staff had gotten a sick stomach from eating in the streets of Egypt. 

BUT... how could I resist this??...... 

始めは、食べるのを迷った。一人のスタッフの人がエジプトで食べ物を食べてお腹をひどくこわした事を聞いていたから。

でも！！こんなおいしそうなの、食べないわけにいかない…！

it was YUMMY! and so worth a sick stomach (which thankfully didn't happen...)

で、結果おいしかった〜！お腹をこわしても価値あり（運良くそれもなかったけれど）

Mohammed was 14, but behaved like a grownup, making sure everyone was okay and really hosting us at his country.

モハメッドは１４歳なのに、大人みたいな振る舞い。みんなが、大丈夫が常に確認して、自分の国を紹介をしてくれた。

From diary:

"We continued walking a lot, when sun set. Immediately the shops closed, there were no cars or people around the streets, as everyone had gone to eat breakfast. We also happened to pass by a mosque, and you could see people eating while listening to the prayers. Barbara mentioned that Ramadan makes people stronger in that they really learn to appreciate food and how it tastes, and gaining strength from abstaining from eating."

日記から：

『そのまま、私たちはたくさん歩いていると、夕日が沈んだ。すると、いちもくさんにお店は閉まり、道には車も人も全く見えない。みんな、一日の食事をしにいっていたからだ。ちょうど、モスクも通り過ぎて目にしたのは、お祈りを聞きながら一生懸命食事をとるひと。スペイン語教師のバーバラはこんな事を口にした。ラマダンは本当に人を強くする：食事や食べ物がどんな味をするかとても感謝する気持ちを持ち直せる。我慢する事で、強くなる。』

"We dropped by a pizza place for free Wifi, and I called my sister through Skype. It was really really nice to hear her voice and to think that I get to see her soon. It also made me miss home and mamapapa, as she told me their summer visiting stugan and Inga. But at the same time I am experiencing and seeing so much, I wouldn't trade it for anything else. "

『ピザ屋さんのワイファイを使いにいって、Skypeで妹に電話をする。とてもとても彼女の声を聞けるのは嬉しくて、もうすぐスウェーデンで会えると思うと、もっと嬉しくなった。妹は、スウェーデンで家族が山小屋に行った話や、祖母に会った話をしてくれて、家と両親も恋しくなっちゃった。でも、それと同時に思う事は、私は今本当にたくさんなものを見て体験していること。これは何にも代え難い,大切な体験。』

Jordan Part III- Jeep & Deep in the desert ジープでディープに砂漠探検

Second Day in Jordan, from my diary:

ヨルダン２日目、日記から：

Breakfast was yummy pita bread with hummus, oil&spices etc and with the sweet tea that I loved

We got ready and went on two jeeps into the deserts- the sandrock mountains were as powerful and tall as the day before and we got a good look of them as we could go close with the jeeps.

朝ご飯は、おいしいピタパンにフムス（ひよこ豆のペースト）、スパイスが入ったオイル。そしてお気に入りの甘い紅茶。

準備をして、２台のジープに乗り込み、砂漠へー岩山は昨日覚えてたままの力強さと高さ。でも、今日はジープで近くまでいけるからじっくり眺められる。

We also went up a rock that resembled a bridge, and I know we all felt like we were on top the world!!

橋みたいな形をした岩山もあり、みんなでてっぺんまでのぼった。みんな、世界の頂点に達したかのような興奮。

And Sand dunes.... we rolled in the beautiful red sand like children! 

砂丘も…赤く美しい砂の上で私たちはこどもみたいに転がった！

Back in Aquaba we did some shopping- the man we bought spices from was very very kind and would negotiate his prices down! I bought a bunch of spices that I hope to try to use back home...

We also had a nice lunch at a place called Alibaba (also probably the ONLY restaurant open during Ramadan... we saw countless Peace Boat People), where we had some really great hummus, baba ganoush, taboule, and lemon mint juice. DELICIOUS!

アカバに戻るとショッピング。スパイスを買いにいった所のおじさんはとてもとても優しく、自ら値段を安く交渉！　色々なスパイスを買ったけれど、家で試してみたいなぁ。

その後、アリババという感じのいいレストラン（ラマダン中、お店を開けていたのもここだけだったかも…ピースボートの人にたくさん会った）で、とってもおいしいフムス、ババ・ガヌーシュ（なすのピューレ）、タブレを食べてレモン・ミントジュースを飲む。お、お、おいしい〜！

Devon Jay Tiev and I also went into a shisha café and I tried my first shisha. It was nice and I enjoyed the experience.  Jordinian coffee was very interesting, it tasted like strong coffee but with some spices… Everyone joined in to catch up on each other's day, becoming more and more like family :-) 

デボンとティエブとジェイ（英語教師仲間）と一緒に、シーシャ（水たばこ）のカフェにいった。初めてのシーシャ、面白い体験だった。ヨルダンのコーヒーも面白く、濃いコーヒーに少しスパイスが入っている感覚。

気づくと、みんなが集まり、お互いの一日の話を聞く…どんどんどんどん、こうやって「家族」になっていく：）

We went back to the boat around 6ish since we were really tired. I finished up some postcards and went to dinner with my roommate. 

EXHAUSTED but SO HAPPY! I cannot believe the experiences I've had in the last 48 hours.

２日間の疲労がたまったのか、午後６時には船に帰る。絵はがきを書いて、ルームメートとよるご飯を食べにいく。

疲れたけど幸せ！この４８時間自分が体験したことが、信じられない。

Jordan Part II- Shooting Star like a Rocket ヨルダン２：ロケットみたいな流れ星

As the sun was setting we got in to the back of a truck to drive into stay at a Bedouin camp. The ride was bumpy but so exciting, and once we got to the camp we were given our tents. What fascinated me the most was the sound of silence. After being on a boat where there constantly are sounds- it was serene and purifying to just sit and enjoy silence.

お日様が沈み始めたころ、トラックの荷台の所に乗って砂漠のベドウィンキャンプに出発。でこぼこしてお尻は痛いけど、大興奮。そしてキャンプにつくとテントをみせてもらう。一番感動したのは、「静けさ」の”音”。常になにかの音が聞こえる船に変わって、砂漠のしずけさは平和で落ち着く。座ってそれを楽しむ。

Jordinian food: tasted so good! And the tea with ginger even better! We had a nice dinner sitting down all together on beautiful carpets. We also went outside to see the stars lying down on the sand. We saw a HUGE shooting that went through across the whole sky lasting for 5 seconds, it was so big and beautiful that it almost didn't look like a star, more like a rocket. Eventually we all dragged our mattresses from our camps and connected them all to one big bed and slept together under the stars and the moon. I woke up a few times, and every time I could see how the moon was traveling a bit.

ヨルダンの食べ物：おいしい！しょうがが入ったお茶も、もっとおいしい！おおきなきれいな絨毯にみんなで座って食べた食事はおいしかった。そのあとは、砂に寝転んで星をみる。すると、広く大きな空を５秒くらいかけて横断する、それはそれは大ーーーーーきな流れ星をみる。大きすぎて、きれいすぎて、星じゃなくて、ロケットみたいなそんな感覚。それに魅了されてか、最終的にはテントからマットレスを引っ張りだして、隣同士に並べて大きなベッドにして、みんなで星と月の下で寝た。何回か起きたけれど、毎回月が少しずつ移動しているのに気づく。

We woke up naturally with the sunrise, and it was beautiful- the moon was dimming and the sun was coming out from the other side of the mountains lighting us up. It was this experience in the deserts that made me realize n really recognize and connect all I know about the earth, the seasons and how it rotates around the sun while the moon rotates around the earth.

朝日と共に自然と目が覚める。目にきれいなものが飛び込んでくる：月は薄れていって、反対側の山から太陽が出てくる。この砂漠での経験が、地球について、四季について、宇宙について、地球が太陽を回って月が地球を回っているとか…そういう私が知っている知識を再認識させてくれた。

What a special place Earth is.

地球はなんてスペシャルところだろう。

Jordan part I- A Kiss from a Camel & Intriguing Petra らくだからのキス＆感動のペトラ遺跡！

First time in Jordan- it was a country of many surprises. Everything was different from what I knew or experienced before: the scenery, the language, the culture, the religion, the food. Perhaps that's why I found it the most intriguing and memorable country.

初めてのヨルダンーたくさんの驚きがあった国だった。すべてが、私が今まで見た物や体験してきたものと違う：景色、言葉、文化、宗教、食べ物…もしかすると、だから一番興味深く印象に残った国なのかもしれない。

From my diary:

We woke up bright and early at 6 to meet for breakfast at 6:30, and after a long wait for our passports, we got out at around 9:30. As soon as we got out of the shuttle a flood of taxi drivers were eager to take us- and after a good 20 minutes of negotiating we got a deal. 


日記から：
早ーい６時におきて６時半に朝ご飯をすませてから、しばらくパスポートを待って９時半に外にでれた。シャトルバスをできるとタクシーの運転手の波がやってきて私たちの取り合いをする。２０分交渉をし続けて、やっと値段がきまって出発。

The city of Aquaba looked deserted as all stores were closed due to Ramadan. We listened to exotic Arabic music in the car, and dropped by an area with a man with two camels. The camel kissed me on the cheek and we also tried camel milk. He also treated us with Bedoin tea, and it was sweet and delicious.


アカバの街は、イスラム教のラマダンの影響で、店がほとんど開いてなく人もあまり見かけなかった。車で、変わったアラビアン音楽を聞いていると、２頭のらくだを世話するおじさんの所たどり着いた。らくだからは歓迎のキス、そしてらくだのミルクも飲んだ。おじさんは、砂漠に住む人たちベドウィンのお茶も作ってくれる。甘くておいしい。

When we got to Petra it was magical, fascinating and amazing- it is still hard to believe that people once built it- how did they think of this? It was very interesting. There were also a non-stop flow of donkey-riding/horse-riding/camel-riding offers and we all noted that these men were very good looking. 


ペトラにつくと、魔法にかけられたようなびっくりと感動。今でも、かつて人が作った物と信じがたい。どうやって思いついたんだろう？　でも、その感動の合間合間に、常にろばや馬やらくだにのらないか誘われ続けた。しつこいんだけど、聞いてくる男の人たちはなぜかみんなハンサム。

Busy with Events in the Red Sea イベントで忙しい紅海

Our time from Sri Lanka to Jordan was filled with events!

スリランカからヨルダンまでの時間は色々なイベントで大忙し！

In GET Project Presentations, students work on different project in English, such as writing a children's book, doing a play and making a music video. With Beth (left) and Patricia (right), we made our own music video to show an example to the students. So much silliness, but so much fun!

GETのプロジェクトプレゼンテーションでは、生徒たちが英語で色々なプロジェクトを行う：絵本を描いたり、劇をしたり、ミュージックビデオを作ったり。ベス（左）とパトリシア（右）と、ミュージックビデオがどんなものか紹介するために、自分たちで作ってみた。

ふざけてばっかりだけど、それも楽しい！

The Asian Fashion Show was an event for all the participants to dress in the traditional or cultural clothing they purchased in the Asian countries that we visited. There were countless of saris from Singapore and Sri Lanka, Aozais from Vietnam... not one the same :)

アジアンファッションショーでは、参加者が、アジアの国々で買った民族衣装を披露。シンガポールとスリランカからのサリーやベトナムのアオザイは数えきれないほど…それでも、ふたつとして同じものはなかった：） 

Saana Auction was an auction- but different from a regular kind that you imagine. All items that were auctioned off were skills and experiences the staff could provide- language lessons, songs, dates... As part of this I offered Swedish classes, and I was scared to death anyone would be interested! Thankfully, my lesson was purchased and gosh I was relieved :-) 

サナーオークションは、通常と少し違うオークション。落札されるものは、スタッフが提供できるスキルや体験：言語のレッスンや、歌、デート…この中で私はスウェーデン語のレッスンを提供したけれど、だれも興味がないことが怖くて仕方がない！でもありがたいことに落札されて、安心：ー）

Arabian Night was held as we were approaching the Arab country Jordan. An event were the audience were entertained by belly dance performances, we celebrated our arrival to the Middle East with learning greetings in Arabic and dancing belly dance under the full moon lit sky. 

アラビアンナイトはアラブの国ヨルダンへと向かっているときに行われた。お客さんはベリーダンスショーを楽しみ、満月の空のもと、皆でアラビア語を習い踊りながら中東へ向かっている事を祝う。

It was also my close friend Patricia's birthday. Happy Birthday! It felt awesome to be part of your special day and I feel so grateful to have met you. 

この日は、親友のパトリシアの誕生日でもあった。誕生日おめでとう！特別な日を共にできて嬉しかったし、それよりも、出会えた事に感謝。

The Day before we arrived at Aquaba, Jordan (from my diary): 

”BEAUTIFUL view of the sunset by the mountains, brown desert-y looking rocks and the moon. Sun on right side of open deck and moon on the other, it was a magical sight that I couldn't even imagine- seeing both moon & sun on the same horizon, connected by the sky. ”

ヨルダンのアカバに着く前の日の日記からは：

”すーーーごくきれいな山に落ちる夕日。砂漠のような茶色い岩に、月も見える。オープンデッキにたつと、右側に夕日、左側に月。魔法のような、想像もしたことない景色：それは同じ水平線に空でつながれた月とお日様両方が見えること。”

First time in the Middle East, here we come!
