Birthday Surprise! サプライズ誕生日！

The night before my birthday and the arrival to Guatemala, my lovely GET family prepared a lovely surprise. At the dinner, they all came up and sang a song- an original song about me, which Tiev had written the lyrics and Patri made up the music too!

I didn't see it coming at all, and it made me tear up a bit....

私の誕生日のグアテマラ到着の前日、私の素敵なGETファミリーが素敵なサプライズをしてくれた。夕食を食べているとみんなが立ち上がって歌い始めたの：それも、オリジナルのモニカの歌。ティエブが作詞、パトリシア作曲！

全然知らなかったから、泣きそうになっちゃった…

At the meeting, they did the song again... and this time, Bekah kindly recorded it.

No one has ever made a song for me, and this song will stay with me forever. I am so lucky to have met these talented, inspiring, helping and kind individuals to begin with, and this surprise was just beyond what I had imagined. 

I feel so blessed and happy whenever I even think about this song- and seeing it makes me happy every time! I wanted to share this on the blog as well, as it certainly became one of the highlights of the voyage.

Peace Night & Clau's Birthday ピースナイト＆クラウディアの誕生日

August 15th is a special day for two reasons.
It is the day World War Two ended. And it is Claudia's birthday, our lovely Spanish teacher from Argentina.

８月１５日が特別な日なのには理由がふたつ。
ひとつは、第二次世界大戦が終わった日。もうひとつは、アルゼンチン人のスペイン語教師のクラウディアのお誕生日。

For the end of World War Two, there was a huge event called the Peace Night. As part of the night to remember the lives lost and to celebrate and appreciate peace, many of the teachers joined the group of participants doing a "Peace Dance".

この日は、ピースナイトという終戦記念日のイベントが行われた。戦争で失われた命に敬意をはらってそのことを忘れない事、そして平和を祝いそれがあることに感謝する事。その中での「ピースダンス」をする参加者のグループの中に、先生たち何人かで参加した。

But before that, we had a relaxing day to celebrate someone special. Always positive and willing to help, Claudia's presence was necessary and so important on the boat.
We enjoyed breakfast with some music & birthday song.

でもその前に、とても特別な誰かを祝うゆっくりした一日を過ごした。いつも前向きで他人を助けている、クラウディア。彼女の存在はとても大切で、船の中でなくてはならないものだったと思う。
朝は、音楽を聞きながら朝食を楽しんだ。

Then came Peace Night. From my diary:

There was a lovely shadow puppet of elephant named Hanako, who would not eat the poisoned apple during the war, who lost weight and died- it was beautiful but so sad. 


ピースナイトのイベント。日記から：
とても可愛らしい影絵の劇があった。象のはなこという、戦争中に生きていた象が、動物をすべて殺せという命令があったときに、毒の入ったりんごをどうしても食べなくて、体重を失い死んでしまったというお話。とても悲しく、でも美しく語られていた。

Next was our dance。 Next came testimonies from war from different people, all ages and nationalities and languages. It was very touching and it illustrated that this one war brought so much to many different countries: the day of war ending in Japan is independence day for korea etc. there is always 2 sides of the story. 


その次がピースダンス。その次が、戦争からの色々な人の証言。様々な年齢や国籍や言語で行われた。それぞれの証言を聞いていると、ひとつの戦争が本当にいろいろなものを各国、各個人にもたらした事に気づく。日本では終戦記念日である８月１５日は、韓国にとっては、独立記念日だったり。すべての物語にはいろいろな視点があることに気づく。

It was a very thought-provoking and touching event, very effectively put together with no MC, guided by light and music, and I think it was very effective. It taught many people the importance of peace and peace keeping and not have war repeat. Mother Teresa’s quote was mentioned that there are two types of poor countries- the financially poor one like India, and the ones that are ignorant to other suffering countries, like Japan.


とても考えさせられる、感動するこのピースナイトのイベントは、司会もなく、光と音だけで創られていてとても効果的。たくさんの人に平和の大切さや、平和を保つ大切さと戦争が繰り返されない事の大切さを教えてくれたと思う。イベントの中ででてきたマザーテレサの言葉が気になる：世界には２つの種類の貧しい国があること。経済的金銭的に貧しいインドみたいな国。それと、苦しい思いをしている国々を気づかない、無知である、日本みたいな国。

Mizuans- Photo-journalism and Identity 水案ーフォトジャーナリズムとアイデンティティについて

A continuation from last post-

Mizuans are guest speakers who come on board to do lectures about various topics, usually topics related to the place we are approaching. Introducing us to things and insights we would otherwise may have not come across, I learned and started thinking about so many things.

「水案」とは、ピースボートに招待されるゲストスピーカーのことで、私たちが向かっている国に関連するあらゆるトピックについて講義をしてくれる人たち。ピースボートでなければきっと出会えなくて、色々な事について学び考えさせてくれる機会を与えてくれた大事なひとたち。

Naomi Toyoda, is a photographer and a photo journalist (http://www.ne.jp/asahi/n/toyoda/). I went to several of his lectures. From my diary-

I went to Toyoda Naomi’s lecture on Iraqi war- The photos of civilians and mothers and children particularly were powerful, as really, they were the victims while America was putting a show of ‘releasing the Iraqi public from Saddam Hussein’ while in reality none of them wanted that.

イラク戦争についての講義に行く。子供やお母さん、市民の写真が特に衝撃的：アメリカがイラク市民を“助ける”現状は、実際その市民の望んでいる事ではなく、彼らが本当の被害者。

On another day, I went to Toyoda-san’s lecture on Palestine. It was very interesting to connect the religion class I had taken in Montreal to what is happening now, and also more importantly, what is happening to people’s lives. When he put it in the way he did- Israel only being called so by Israelis and the other countries versus it being Palestine to the surrounding areas and yet Palestinians being unable to return to their home land really made my heart ache.

The rights of people are not valued equally or fairly, and it is too much that this has been going on for 40+ years. I also learned how even more complicated it must be for these people, living in Palestine and being Christian or living in Lebanon as a Palestine refugee and being categorized as Arab as he/she speaks Arabic…

また違う日、豊田さんのパレスチナについての講義を聞きにいく。モントリオールでとった宗教のクラスでイスラエルとパレスチナの事を学んだが、それを今の現状と結べつけたことは貴重だった。けれどそれよりも重みがあったのは、実際人々の人生に何が怒っているかを知る事ができたこと。イスラエルが、イスラエル人と他の国の人がその地域を『イスラエル』と呼んでいる事にたいして、そのすぐ周りの人々にとってはその同じ地域が『パレスチナ』。それでいて、パレスチナ人は、自分たちの名前の国に帰れていない事に心が痛む。

４０年以上も、どっち側かの人々の権利が平等に尊敬されていないのはひどすぎる。

他にも、パレスチナに住むキリスト教徒やレバノンに住むパレスチナ難民がアラビア語を話すからアラブ人と見られてしまう人たち…

Your life and destiny is determined so strongly by where, when and in what environment you are born into. I ask myself, as someone who has been lucky with that.. what can i do to help? 

生まれた時代や場所や、とりまく環境が、こんなにも人生と運命を左右する。恵まれた環境に生まれた自分には何ができるのだろう…と自分に問いかける。

Adel is a half Libyan half Japanese Mizuan. He grew up in Libya, worked for Peace Boat, and is now attending University in Japan. He lectured together with a Jordanian woman Rahma the Arabic countries, its culture and language etc. Among many things, he talked about identity, which I related strongly to. From diary:

 I got my answer on identity from Adel and related very much. I liked the way he formed it as having 4 selves- a Japanese self, Lebanese self, Muslim self, and the real Adel. I could really relate to having multiple different identities that make up a person and maybe for me that would be the Japanese self, Swedish self, the international self, teacher self and Monica self. There are so many, but they are all real me. 

アーデルは、ハーフリビア人、ハーフ日本人の水案。リビアで育ち、ピースボートで働いて、今は日本の大学に通っている。ラフマさんというヨルダンからの女性と一緒に、アラブの国々、文化、言葉などについて講義をしていた。色々話しをしていた中でも、一番印象に残ったのはアイデンティティについて。とても共感した。日記から：

アイデンティティについての答えをもらって、すごく共感。自分には４つのアイデンティティがあるという表現をしていたのが好きだった：日本人の自分、リビア人の自分、イスラム教徒の自分、そして本当のアーデル。数個のアイデンティティを自分の中に持っている事に関してとても共感した。自分に置き換えたとしたのなら、私の場合それは日本人の自分、スウェーデンの自分、インターナショナルな自分、教師の自分、そしてモニカという自分。多いけど、全部本当の私だ。

We also had an interesting discussion on gender and perception of what women should wear in different areas of the world. Someone brought up western and Arab women feeling bad for the other end- poor women on the other side for 1. Having to cover up and 2. Having to show so much skin. I had never considered it that way and I found it very interesting. Adel also brought up a great point that with internet and universal access of information, these trends may also change a lot.

他にも、ジェンダーについて…性的偏見、ジェンダーバイアスについて話し合った。世界の色々な場所によって、“女性がきるべきもの”が変わってくる事。中でもだれかが、西洋の女性とアラブの女性はお互いを可哀想に思っている事をとりあげた。「あんなに肌を隠さないといけなくて可哀想」、「あんなに肌をみせないといけなくて可哀想」。そんな感覚、考えた事もなかったからとても興味深い。このときアーデルは、インターネットとか世界と介しての情報が普及しているから、そういう傾向も変わるかもしれないと言った。きっとそう。

Before going into detail about the very inspiring people, let me explain what "Mizuans" are. They are guest speakers who come on board to do lectures about various topics, usually topics related to the place we are approaching. とても刺激になった素晴らしい人たちを紹介するまえに,『水案』が何かを説明しようと思う。ピースボートに招待されるゲストスピーカーのことで、私たちが向かっている国に関連するあらゆるトピックについて講義をしてくれる人たち。ピースボートでなければきっと出会えなくて、色々な事について学び考えさせてくれる機会を与えてくれた大事なひとたち。

Mr. Yu Tanaka
A specialist in global warming, sustainable energy, electricity, nuclear power... Tanakasans lectures were impressive. Facts, figures, statitistics and graphs made it easier for me to understand some of the more complicates issues, and I was most impressed and attracted to his ideas for sustainable energy.

田中優さん
地球温暖化、持続可能なエネルギー、電気、原子力発電の専門家である田中さんの講義は衝撃的だった。実際の数字や統計やグラフを使って、分かりにくいことをうまく説明してくれて、持続可能なエネルギーについての講義はその中でも一番印象に残った。

From my diary:

His points were positive, that japan, being a very technologically advanced country is the country which is best conserving energy, and we can cut down more, just by buying home appliances that conserves energy just when changing electronic appliances. Using sho-ene (energy conserving) goods, batteries, battery cars and use natural energy sources would make japan independent and sustainable, which will lead to saving tons of money that now is spent on importing energy sources. It would also reduce environmental waste tremendously, leading us towards a more peaceful world. 


日記から：
科学技術がとても進んでいる日本だからこそ、一番うまくエネルギーを保存しているし、もっと保存できる。それも、新しい家電を買うときに、省エネのものを買うだけで、大幅にエネルギーがカットできるというとてもポジティブな意見。省エネグッズ、バッテリー、バッテリーカーや自然エネルギーを使うことで、日本もエネルギー面において持続可能で自立した国になれる。そうすると、今エネルギーを輸入するために使っているお金もセーブできる。環境への廃棄物も削減され、もっと平和な世界になるはず。

Another one of his lectures was on 3.11. earthquake and the Japanese government's conspiracy of hiding radiation numbers and setting the standard chemical values high. From my diary:
He gave us surprising statistics, where he claimed it wasn't a clever idea in the first place to develop nuclear energy plant when it is the number one country for big earthquakes. He also strongly spoke of being careful about food and drinks, as the government minimum intake of radiation was hundreds times more than what is allowed in the U.S. and Europe. It really scared me to know this reality of Japan, and scarier yet was that the information is not out so much there when the public deserves every bit of it.


彼のもうひとつの講義は３．１１．の地震後の政府の放射能の数値に対して。
日記から：
統計の数字はびっくりするもの。世界で一番と言っていいほど地震国家なのに、原子力を作ったこと自体が本当はおかしいという意見があった。政府の設定した体に入れていい放射能の数値がアメリカやヨーロッパの何倍もあるということは、食べ物や飲み物に関して気をつけないといけないことを意味する。この日本の現実を知って、私は怖くなったけれど、それより怖いのは、この情報がそこまで大きく世の中に出ていないこと。みんなすべて知る権利はあるのに、逆に個々で調べなければいけない「責任」になっている。


Not a mizuan, but in my mind she is, Ai Onodera (co-ordinator for the Montessori Children's House onboard) also spoke about Fukushima Nuclear power plant issue. From diary:
It made me more aware of how uncertain the numbers and media is in Japan, and how we really do not know the amount of radiation that travel across Japan. It was a shock hearing that the government changed the minimum radiation level to 100 mini-Sievert when usually it is kept at 1 mini-Sievert. 


水案ではないけれど、このトピックに対して、小野寺愛さん（モンテッソーリこどものいえのコーディネーター）もたくさん話してくれた。日記から：
日本のメディアと公表されている数値がどれだけ不安定なものか分からないし、どれだけの放射線が日本を動いているのかが分からない。通常の放射能の最低値が１ミニシーベルトなところを１００ミニシーベルトに変えてあるということを聞いて本当にショックだった。

We saw in a documentary that many children of children who were affected by Chernobyl had health problems. It really hurt to see, and I think the audience all realized that this possibly can be Japan in 30+ years- whatever we research and do now, will affect the future in many generations, and I was taught that it is dangerous to just get relieved by newspaper or TV. One is responsible for looking at various sources about the same issue and make the best judgment for oneself, to be able to protect oneself and his/her family and future.

チェルノビールで被害にあった子供たちの子供たちが、健康に問題があるということを、ドキュメンタリーを通して学んだ。心が痛む映像だったけれど、見ている人みんながきっと思ったのは、これが日本の３０年後かもしれない事。今調べられる事、やれる事が、将来の何世代にも影響する。新聞やTVをみて安心しないこと。色々なデータや情報源をみることが責任になり、それが自分や家族や未来を守るために必要になってきている。

In GET Project Presentations, students work on different project in English, such as writing a children's book, doing a play and making a music video. With Beth (left) and Patricia (right), we made our own music video to show an example to the students. So much silliness, but so much fun!

GETのプロジェクトプレゼンテーションでは、生徒たちが英語で色々なプロジェクトを行う：絵本を描いたり、劇をしたり、ミュージックビデオを作ったり。ベス（左）とパトリシア（右）と、ミュージックビデオがどんなものか紹介するために、自分たちで作ってみた。

ふざけてばっかりだけど、それも楽しい！

The Asian Fashion Show was an event for all the participants to dress in the traditional or cultural clothing they purchased in the Asian countries that we visited. There were countless of saris from Singapore and Sri Lanka, Aozais from Vietnam... not one the same :)

アジアンファッションショーでは、参加者が、アジアの国々で買った民族衣装を披露。シンガポールとスリランカからのサリーやベトナムのアオザイは数えきれないほど…それでも、ふたつとして同じものはなかった：） 

Saana Auction was an auction- but different from a regular kind that you imagine. All items that were auctioned off were skills and experiences the staff could provide- language lessons, songs, dates... As part of this I offered Swedish classes, and I was scared to death anyone would be interested! Thankfully, my lesson was purchased and gosh I was relieved :-) 

サナーオークションは、通常と少し違うオークション。落札されるものは、スタッフが提供できるスキルや体験：言語のレッスンや、歌、デート…この中で私はスウェーデン語のレッスンを提供したけれど、だれも興味がないことが怖くて仕方がない！でもありがたいことに落札されて、安心：ー）

Arabian Night was held as we were approaching the Arab country Jordan. An event were the audience were entertained by belly dance performances, we celebrated our arrival to the Middle East with learning greetings in Arabic and dancing belly dance under the full moon lit sky. 

アラビアンナイトはアラブの国ヨルダンへと向かっているときに行われた。お客さんはベリーダンスショーを楽しみ、満月の空のもと、皆でアラビア語を習い踊りながら中東へ向かっている事を祝う。

It was also my close friend Patricia's birthday. Happy Birthday! It felt awesome to be part of your special day and I feel so grateful to have met you. 

この日は、親友のパトリシアの誕生日でもあった。誕生日おめでとう！特別な日を共にできて嬉しかったし、それよりも、出会えた事に感謝。

The Day before we arrived at Aquaba, Jordan (from my diary): 

”BEAUTIFUL view of the sunset by the mountains, brown desert-y looking rocks and the moon. Sun on right side of open deck and moon on the other, it was a magical sight that I couldn't even imagine- seeing both moon & sun on the same horizon, connected by the sky. ”

ヨルダンのアカバに着く前の日の日記からは：

”すーーーごくきれいな山に落ちる夕日。砂漠のような茶色い岩に、月も見える。オープンデッキにたつと、右側に夕日、左側に月。魔法のような、想像もしたことない景色：それは同じ水平線に空でつながれた月とお日様両方が見えること。”

Peace Boat- What? Where? When? Who?

What? 何なのか？

Peace Boat is a NGO and an NGO that "works to promote peace, human rights, equal and sustainable development and respect for the environment". It is a Japan-based organization, and one of the ways in which they work for their purpose is through the Global Voyages. It is on the 74th Global Voyage that I joined as an English Teacher.

ピースボートは、平和や人権、平等で持続可能な開発、環境への尊敬を目指すNGOそしてNPOです。日本をベースに活動している団体で、この目標を達成するためにしていることが、世界一周の船旅を出すこと。この７４回クルーズに私は英語教師として乗船しました。

Who? 誰？　

So for the 74th Voyage, who was in it?　で、74回クルーズは誰で成り立っていたのか？

The Peace Boat staff was a team of Peace Boat Office staff and volunteer staff that worked for the various aspects needed to make a successful voyage- people in charge of the onboard newspaper, onboard events, GET (Global English Training), Montessori Children's House, onboard musical, onboard TV... and the list goes on and on.

ピースボートスタッフと呼ばれるチームは、日本各地のピースボートセンターで働く人たち、そしてボランティアスタッフも含まれました。彼らはよい船旅に欠かせない人たちー船内新聞、イベント（企画）、英語・スペイン語コースのGET,モンテッソーリ洋上のこどものいえ、ミュージカルやTVなどを担当していました。

There was also a Kokusai Bu (literally means International Section)- which was made up of GET English and Spanish language teachers, CCs (Communication Coordinators- they interpreted and translated lectures and newspapers from English to Japanese and Japanese to English), and the Web Reporter (taking photos and writing about what happens in ports and onboard).

国際部といわれるチームは、英語・スペイン語教師、CC（コミュニケーション・コーディネーター：船の中と外両方の生活においての日英／英日の通訳や翻訳）、そしてウェブリポーター（船内の生活や寄港地でのツアーの写真や記事をかきウェブへ更新する人）で成り立っていました。

It was a team made up of wonderful, talented people. Everyone was so busy throughout, that I couldn't talk to many of them as much as I would have liked to.
みんなとても才能あふれた個性的な人たち。でも船の生活は忙しくて、全然話し足りなかった。

And of course Participants! from 1.5 years old to 89 years olds, age wasn't the only factor that show diversity of the passengers on the boat. They were from all over Japan with various experiences and backgrounds- I have met many friends across generations :)
それと欠かせないのが参加者の方！１．５歳から８９歳までーこの多様性は年齢だけではありません。日本各地からきた参加者は様々な経験や背景の持ち主：世代を超えてのお友達がたくさんできました。
