Busy with Events in the Red Sea イベントで忙しい紅海

Our time from Sri Lanka to Jordan was filled with events!

スリランカからヨルダンまでの時間は色々なイベントで大忙し！

In GET Project Presentations, students work on different project in English, such as writing a children's book, doing a play and making a music video. With Beth (left) and Patricia (right), we made our own music video to show an example to the students. So much silliness, but so much fun!

GETのプロジェクトプレゼンテーションでは、生徒たちが英語で色々なプロジェクトを行う：絵本を描いたり、劇をしたり、ミュージックビデオを作ったり。ベス（左）とパトリシア（右）と、ミュージックビデオがどんなものか紹介するために、自分たちで作ってみた。

ふざけてばっかりだけど、それも楽しい！

The Asian Fashion Show was an event for all the participants to dress in the traditional or cultural clothing they purchased in the Asian countries that we visited. There were countless of saris from Singapore and Sri Lanka, Aozais from Vietnam... not one the same :)

アジアンファッションショーでは、参加者が、アジアの国々で買った民族衣装を披露。シンガポールとスリランカからのサリーやベトナムのアオザイは数えきれないほど…それでも、ふたつとして同じものはなかった：） 

Saana Auction was an auction- but different from a regular kind that you imagine. All items that were auctioned off were skills and experiences the staff could provide- language lessons, songs, dates... As part of this I offered Swedish classes, and I was scared to death anyone would be interested! Thankfully, my lesson was purchased and gosh I was relieved :-) 

サナーオークションは、通常と少し違うオークション。落札されるものは、スタッフが提供できるスキルや体験：言語のレッスンや、歌、デート…この中で私はスウェーデン語のレッスンを提供したけれど、だれも興味がないことが怖くて仕方がない！でもありがたいことに落札されて、安心：ー）

Arabian Night was held as we were approaching the Arab country Jordan. An event were the audience were entertained by belly dance performances, we celebrated our arrival to the Middle East with learning greetings in Arabic and dancing belly dance under the full moon lit sky. 

アラビアンナイトはアラブの国ヨルダンへと向かっているときに行われた。お客さんはベリーダンスショーを楽しみ、満月の空のもと、皆でアラビア語を習い踊りながら中東へ向かっている事を祝う。

It was also my close friend Patricia's birthday. Happy Birthday! It felt awesome to be part of your special day and I feel so grateful to have met you. 

この日は、親友のパトリシアの誕生日でもあった。誕生日おめでとう！特別な日を共にできて嬉しかったし、それよりも、出会えた事に感謝。

The Day before we arrived at Aquaba, Jordan (from my diary): 

”BEAUTIFUL view of the sunset by the mountains, brown desert-y looking rocks and the moon. Sun on right side of open deck and moon on the other, it was a magical sight that I couldn't even imagine- seeing both moon & sun on the same horizon, connected by the sky. ”

ヨルダンのアカバに着く前の日の日記からは：

”すーーーごくきれいな山に落ちる夕日。砂漠のような茶色い岩に、月も見える。オープンデッキにたつと、右側に夕日、左側に月。魔法のような、想像もしたことない景色：それは同じ水平線に空でつながれた月とお日様両方が見えること。”

First time in the Middle East, here we come! 

はじめての中東、ついに上陸！

Welcome Party and Boat Family ウェルカムパーティー＆船内家族

On July 22st, 2011, we had our Welcome Party. Everyone dressed in formal clothing, and we went to the restaurant to enjoy a delicious three course meal. One thing that is very special about Peace Boat is that you meet someone new everyday- the dinner times are a good example of this. You often get seated with people that you don't know, and this is how you get to know them.
It was a nice experience to meet people this way- getting to know people who you would otherwise not have contact with, over food. That night we met a Japanese older couple dressed in beautiful kimono.

７月２2日はウェルカムパーティが開かれた。みんなフォーマルドレスで、レストランへ３コースの食事を楽しんだ。ピースボートならではで特別な事は、毎日新しく出会う人がいること：夕食の時間はそれのいい例だと思う。自分の知らない人と相席になることが多く、それで知り合いになれる。
こういった形で人と知り合えるのは素敵だと思うーこうでなければ知り合わなかった出会わなかった人たちと、一緒に食事をすることでつながりあえる。ウェルカムパーティのこの夜は、素敵な着物を着たご夫婦と一緒になった。

 After the dinner was the Party up on the Pool Deck. While the captain was taking photos with hundreds of passengers, I went around offering to take photos for people. Soon there was a speech by the captain and the cruise director, and the dance party started.

食事のあとはプールデッキでのパーティ。船長が何百人の乗客と写真をとっている間、私は他の参加者たちの写真をとりにまわった。しばらくすると船長とクルーズディレクターからのスピーチがあり、パーティはスタート！

Pool Deck- A place where we eat breakfast, lunch, go in the pool, and gather for special events! 

プールデッキ：朝ご飯、昼ご飯が食べれて、プールに入れて

イベントも行われる万能な場所！

A night to celebrate this special journey of 3.5 months- for better or for worse, we are together- it is quite a unique experience to share a lifestyle while seeing 22 countries, with 800 other people... A family of 800 people. 

特別な３．５ヶ月の始まりを祝う夜：わるかろうが良かろうが、この船にいる人みんなと一緒だ。生活を共にしながら２２カ国を８００人の人と巡るなんてなんてユニークな体験だろう。８００人の家族だ。

Speaking of families, Peace Boat also had an interesting event of creating a family for you for the time onboard. It happens like this: one staff member will just pick out people, announce his/her role in the family, and then once a family is created, you are off together to bond! 

家族で思い出すのが、もうひとつのピースボートならではの企画、船内家族。船の上での自分の家族だ。こういうこと：スタッフの人が集まった人から人を選び、家族の誰の役割かを発表し、ひと家族が構成されたら、そのまま家族で時間を過ごしにいく！

This was my boat parents- I also had 11 other siblings. In my real family I only have one sister, so it felt so cool to had so many brothers and sisters. 

この二人が私の船内両親。他にも１１人の兄弟がいた。実際の家族では妹が一人しかいないから、こんなにお兄ちゃんや妹がいたのがとても嬉しかった。

We would have gatherings like this- although people got very busy right away. Even then when we see each other on the boat we would greet one another as family. "Hi dad! mom!"

こんな感じで家族で集まったけど、旅が始まってすぐみんな結構忙しくてなかなか会えなかった。それでも、船のどこかで会うと家族として挨拶をする。「おはようお父さん！お母さん！」

Well here is my other boat family, one that I feel closer and more home with. 

We are getting to know the boat better- and here we're hanging out in Freespace, an area with red sofas- if the boat was a really big house, this is probably our living room. 

ここに写っているのは私のもうひとつの船の家族；もっと自分に近い存在で、心が落ち着く人たち。少しずつ船の構造が分かってきて、ここではフリースペースという、赤いソファが並ぶエリアで時間を過ごしている。船がおーきな家だとしたら、ここは、リビングになるのかな。

Words from my diary about that night:

"At around 10, Bekah, Jay, Patri and I went up to the top deck to see the stars, and for the first time in my life I saw a Shooting Star! I got so excited I nearly screamed in Patri’s ear. We could see many stars but I hope we see more during the voyage. I felt like a little baby being rocked in a huge bed, with a beautiful planetarium to look at. We really are such small creatures compared to the immense, vast, universe. This whole experience is so unreal still, but I am loving every moment of greeting new people, learning names, learning how to teach better and learning about the people around me. It has only been 4 days, but when I looked next to Patri when we were looking up to the stars, I couldn't believe that I just met briefly met 2 weeks prior- how incredible that we are all so close already."

日記からの、その夜のこと：

「１０時頃にベッカ、パトリ＆ジェイと、トップデッキにいって、星を見に行った。人生で初めて流れ星をみた！！　とてもとても嬉しくてパトリの耳の中に叫んじゃった。今夜はたくさん星がみられたけれど、この船旅でもっと見れるといいな。船に揺られながら座って空を見上げて星をみていると、大きなベッドでプラネタリウムを見ながら揺られている赤ちゃんのような気分だった。こんなにも偉大で大きな宇宙に比べて、なんて私たちは小さな生き物なんだろう。この体験はまだ現実味がないけど、すべての瞬間が嬉しく楽しい：新しい人に挨拶すること、名前を覚えること、どうしたらもっといい先生になれるか学ぶこと、周りにいる人たちについて学ぶこと。まだ４日しか経っていないけれど、横に座って同じく星を見上げるパトリを見ると、たった２週間前に彼女と出会ったことが信じられない。もうこんなにも仲良くなっているんだ」
